Windows Live Installer error (solution) Tag=OnCatalogResult, Error=0x80072ee6

Finally I've managed to install Windows Live Messenger to Windows 7. I had the same error when trying to install it using Windows XP. It think it might be related to me using HSDPA (mobile) internet. There is some registry key or something which makes it unable to download a cab archive which is used during installation. I've provided details on how I worked around this issue below.

So I've tried to install Windows Live Messenger but ended up with the error

OnCatalogResult
0x80072ee6

After having run ProcMon for a while I found that there were some logs at

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WLSetup\Logs

I opened the logs and found lines like

!ERROR! :(10/28/2009 23:14:19) SOURCE=Downloader, CODE=0x80072ee6 ProxyEnumerator failed to load AutoProxy configuration from "(null)".
!ERROR! :(10/28/2009 23:14:19) SOURCE=Downloader, CODE=0x80072ee6 ProxyEnumerator failed to provide next available proxy settings.

So there seemed to be some issues downloading the catalog-web.cab and auto proxy...

So I closed the application and deleted the directory which was created during the installation:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Live
(Windows XP, probably %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Live).

I also deleted all Temporary Internet Files (just in case, don't know if relevant).

Then I installed via installer (which doesn't need to download the cab) from the following page:

How to install the Windows Live suite without the optimization of Microsoft Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946520

So I just downloaded the installer (50MB) and ran it and... Then it ... just worked! :D

Hope this helps someone. If so, please leave a comment!

It only worked temporarily until it wanted to update again. Seems that the installation program has buggy download of the cab files. So I uninstalled the prog and installed Miranda IM instead. If you find any better solution, please post here.
